The 2012 edition of the Canadian Championships/ Ontario Open were held the weekend of July 7-8 at the Royal Hamilton Yacht Club. Snipe sailors from Canada and the US gathered on Hamilton Harbour and experienced first class racing expertly run by PRO extraordinaire Irene McNeill and her crew. Seven races over two days, with conditions that were close to ideal, were completed.
Austin Kana and Jason Hill from North Cape YC were the class of the field finishing first overall with 7 points. On Sunday they won every race. Kana and Hill were winners of the Ontario Open Trophy, respectfully known as “The Painting”.
While Kana and Hill were showing the fleet their transom, a battle for the Leckie Trophy was going on behind them between Julian Inglis and brother Justin, defending Canadian Champs Chris Hains and Barb Mann, and Harri Palm and Molly Kurvink. When all was said and done Palm and Kurvink came out on top of the Hoser Fleet to win the Canadians.
Between RHYC’s excellent hosting, the Saturday Cook Your Own Steak Dinner and entertainment from SCIRA Canada’s official regatta band The Hoofbeats, a fine time was had by all.
